    Os barcos gelados são comuns nos lagos de Wisconsin e Minnesota nos fins de semana de inverno. Os barcos a gelo são semelhantes aos veleiros, mas são equipados com corredores, ou “patins”, e são projetados para correr sobre o gelo, em vez de sobre a água. Os barcos gelados podem se mover muito rapidamente, e muitos entusiastas de barcos no gelo são atraídos pelo esporte por causa da velocidade. Os melhores pilotos de barco a gelo podem atingir velocidades até cinco vezes a velocidade do vento.     Determinar a distância da velocidade é apenas uma das muitas aplicações da integração. Na verdade, as integrais são usadas em uma ampla variedade de aplicações mecânicas e físicas. Neste capítulo, primeiro apresentamos a teoria por trás da integração e usamos integrais para calcular áreas. A partir daí, desenvolvemos o Teorema Fundamental do Cálculo, que relaciona diferenciação e integração. Em seguida, estudamos algumas técnicas básicas de integração e examinamos brevemente algumas aplicações.
