    Você provavelmente está se perguntando: “Quando e onde vou usar estatísticas?” Se você ler algum jornal, assistir televisão ou usar a Internet, verá informações estatísticas. Existem estatísticas sobre crime, esportes, educação, política e imóveis. Normalmente, quando você lê um artigo de jornal ou assiste a um noticiário televisivo, você recebe exemplos de informações. Com essas informações, você pode tomar uma decisão sobre a exatidão de uma declaração, reclamação ou “fato”. Os métodos estatísticos podem ajudá-lo a fazer a “melhor suposição”.

    Como, sem dúvida, você receberá informações estatísticas em algum momento de sua vida, você precisa conhecer algumas técnicas para analisá-las cuidadosamente. Pense em comprar uma casa ou gerenciar um orçamento. Pense na profissão escolhida. As áreas de economia, negócios, psicologia, educação, biologia, direito, ciência da computação, ciência policial e desenvolvimento na primeira infância exigem pelo menos um curso de estatística.
