- Em seu nível mais fundamental, a vida é feita de matéria. A matéria ocupa espaço e tem massa. Toda matéria é composta por elementos, substâncias que não podem ser decompostas ou transformadas quimicamente em outras substâncias. Cada elemento é feito de átomos, cada um com um número constante de prótons e propriedades únicas. Cada elemento é designado por seu símbolo químico e possui propriedades únicas. Essas propriedades exclusivas permitem que os elementos se combinem e se unam entre si de maneiras específicas.
- 2.2: Água
- Você já se perguntou por que os cientistas passam tempo procurando água em outros planetas? É porque a água é essencial para a vida; mesmo pequenos traços dela em outro planeta podem indicar que a vida poderia ou existiu nesse planeta. A água é uma das moléculas mais abundantes nas células vivas e a mais crítica para a vida como a conhecemos. Aproximadamente 60 a 70 por cento do seu corpo é composto de água. Sem isso, a vida simplesmente não existiria.
- 2.3: Moléculas biológicas
- Existem quatro classes principais de macromoléculas biológicas (carboidratos, lipídios, proteínas e ácidos nucléicos), e cada uma é um componente importante da célula e desempenha uma ampla gama de funções. Combinadas, essas moléculas compõem a maior parte da massa de uma célula. As macromoléculas biológicas são orgânicas, o que significa que elas contêm carbono (com algumas exceções, como dióxido de carbono).
