O candidato democrata às primárias Bernie Sanders chegou a Seattle em 8 de agosto de 2015 para fazer um discurso em um comício para promover sua campanha presidencial. Em vez disso, a manifestação foi interrompida — e eventualmente cooptada — por ativistas da Black Lives Matter (Figura 8.1). 1 Por que o grupo arriscou alienar os eleitores democratas ao impedir que Sanders falasse? A liberdade de imprensa e uma mídia independente são dimensões importantes de uma sociedade liberal e uma parte necessária de uma democracia saudável. “Nenhum governo deveria ficar sem censores”, disse Thomas Jefferson, “e onde a imprensa é livre, ninguém nunca ficará”. 4 O que significa ter uma mídia de notícias gratuita? Quais regulamentações limitam o que a mídia pode fazer? Como a mídia contribui para informar os cidadãos e monitorar os políticos e o governo, e como medimos seu impacto?
