A sustentabilidade está focada em atender às necessidades atuais sem comprometer as gerações futuras para atender às suas. A sustentabilidade é um paradigma criado por necessidade a partir de nossa negligência passada com a sociedade, a ecologia e a economia (os três principais componentes da sustentabilidade).
A ética desempenha um grande papel na abordagem das metas de sustentabilidade atuais e futuras, exigidas da ação/inação histórica. Isso é especialmente verdadeiro para questões de justiça ambiental e racismo, além de políticas e movimentos ambientais.
Cidades sustentáveis também são discutidas para abordar as preocupações de sustentabilidade em grande escala de como a humanidade vive. A expansão é o maior obstáculo para a criação de uma cidade sustentável. Existem dois tipos principais de expansão, baixa densidade e alta densidade, que podem ser observados em muitos layouts de cidades com diferentes povoações.
A pegada ecológica é uma ferramenta para ajudar a ilustrar o desequilíbrio entre estilos de vida e comportamentos e o que é ecologicamente sustentável. Para diminuir as pegadas ecológicas, além das injustiças ambientais, a sustentabilidade promove metas de sustentabilidade de causas comuns. Eles enfatizam que a maioria dos objetivos da humanidade são os mesmos e que esses devem ser o que nos motiva e nos une à medida que avançamos em direção a um futuro incerto. Além disso, a humanidade também deve considerar como estamos abordando o cumprimento dessas metas. O mito do mundo biônico nos adverte para não fazermos suposições ou seguirmos a saída mais fácil. Somente por meio de decisões difíceis podemos garantir um futuro equitativo e sustentável.
