Pete Buttigieg était un jeune maire relativement méconnu de South Bend, dans l'Indiana, dont l'expérience gouvernementale était limitée par rapport à nombre de ses rivaux. Il s'agissait d'un candidat compétitif dans un cercle profond et diversifié de candidats démocrates à la présidentielle de 2020. Cependant, Buttigieg a compensé ce qui lui manquait en termes d'expérience formelle grâce à son talent pour parler de politiques complexes de manière claire et à sa capacité à résister à la pression des journalistes et à rester calme, voire positif, tout au long du processus. Il était inhabituel dans le domaine démocrate pour avoir accepté à plusieurs reprises d'être interviewé par Fox News. Buttigieg est diplômé de Harvard et titulaire d'une bourse Rhodes. Il a servi dans la Réserve navale américaine de 2009 à 2017, y compris un déploiement de sept mois en Afghanistan. Il a également été le premier candidat LGBTQ de l'un ou l'autre parti à se lancer sérieusement dans la saison des primaires présidentielles.
Buttigieg s'est déclaré à la présidence le 14 avril 2019. Il a travaillé dur pour effectuer les visites requises dans les États votants anticipés de l'Iowa et du New Hampshire, y compris le forum des candidats Vote Vets à Manchester en septembre 2019. En mettant l'accent sur des aspects spécifiques de son travail dans l'armée, Buttigieg a cherché à faire en sorte que la foule le considère comme un ancien combattant, comme l'un d'entre eux. 1 Comme les candidats à un poste à tous les niveaux du gouvernement américain, Buttigieg a compris que les campagnes devaient atteindre les électeurs et les obliger à voter, faute de quoi le candidat échouerait lamentablement.
