从公元前2600年到2000年，小城镇变得人口过多，社区向外发展，建造了更多的定居点，每个村庄都被用捣土制成的墙壁所环绕。 考古学家指出，定居点之间可能存在冲突，迫使人们需要某种保护。 用冲压土建造任何建筑物、房屋、墙壁或民用建筑的首选方法。 木制框架勾勒出建筑物的轮廓，在框架之间插入小石头和泥土并压实，形成一堵厚而坚固的墙壁。 这种冲压土墙建筑模型成为中国长城早期部分的模型（3.30）。
3.30 中国长城的早期部分在坟墓中发现的丝绸织物残留物使历史学家相信，这是小农场开始生产丝绸的时期。 在考古遗址挖掘出的制造丝线的专业工具表明，中国丝绸产业已开始长期占据主导地位，后来在著名的丝绸之路上扩张。
这个时期幸存下来的陶器质量非常出色，在新石器时代的文化中是不寻常的。 陶器是使用快速陶轮制成多种尺寸和形状的。 考古学家还发现了多个上升气流窑，这是新石器时代文化的先进模型，有助于批量生产独特的龙山黑陶器（3.31）。 特定的高脚杯代表着另一项成就：多种形态的超薄高脚杯；顶部的喇叭形边缘、杯子和多形的茎。 它被称为蛋壳陶器（3.32），经过高度抛光，是他们使用高速轮发展的一个例子。
中国的龙山和其他定居点开启了新石器时代的许多独特进步。 他们创造了批量制造技术，开发了用于织物和服装的新材料，建造了安全的墙壁和建筑物，并建立了分层的社会和军队。
