如果员工接触血液或 OPIM，雇主必须执行保护协议：
- 暴露事件发生后，雇主必须至少记录暴露途径和暴露事件发生的情况。 为了有用，文档必须包含有关事件的足够详细信息。
- 如果被刺破或割伤，如果没有穿透但暴露在外（飞溅）并出现疾病，则在 OSHA 300 日志上记录事件
- 向员工免费提供肝炎疫苗。 员工可以拒绝接种疫苗。
- 测试员工血液中是否存在疾病
- 要求并规定在暴露事件发生后向员工提供暴露后咨询。 有关感染状态的咨询，包括所有检测的结果和解释，将帮助员工了解潜在的感染风险，并就保护个人接触者做出决定。
受管制的废物
《血源性病原体标准》使用 “受管制废物” 一词来指需要特殊处理的以下类别的废物：(1) 液态或半液态血液或 OPIM；(2) 受血液或 OPIM 污染的物品，在以下情况下这些物质会以液态或半液态释放出来压缩；(3) 用干血或 OPIM 结块且能够在处理过程中释放这些材料的物品；(4) 受污染的利器；(5) 含有血液或 OPIM 的病理和微生物废物。
尽管不被视为紧急行动，但当工作人员在受监管的废物清理操作中接触血液和传染性物质时，可以遵循HAZWOPER标准1910.120的某些内容。
