    推论是基于事实和个人知识相结合的结论。 例如,如果你在五个不同的学术部门上了五个不同的课程,发现每个班级都没有少数民族学生,那么你可以推断出少数民族学生上过这所学校。 但是,尽管你的推断看似合理,但这不是事实,因为你没有见过学院的所有学生,也无法获得入学人数。

    事实不一定比推论更好或更重要;它们的用途不同。 事实提供了信息,而推论赋予了信息意义。 有时候,你所能得到的只是推论。 例如,反映 “美国人” 信仰或行为的统计数据只是根据从相对较少的个人那里收集的信息得出的对这些群体的推论。 为了可信,推断必须合理,并以事实证据为依据。

    专家的意见是有力的证据。 护林员关于山地自行车或凸耳底登山靴造成的越野破坏的证词反映了专家的训练和经验。 一个随便的徒步旅行者做出同样的观察是难以置信的。

    个人证词或知情意见是基于直接的个人经历。 当某人亲身经历过某件事时,他们的知识不容轻易忽视。 如果你亲眼目睹某人受到虐待,无论是作为事件的客体还是观察者,你的目击者的证词都将具有重要意义。

    反思任务

    在通过考虑偏见、事实和推论来反思你的有争议的研究论文之后,你现在有机会反思你在整个研究和写作过程中学到了什么。 批判性地思考你的写作过程,反思每个阶段,并考虑这种写作经历与其他写作经历有何相似或不同。 另外,估计你的来源中有多少百分比是事实、例子、推论或知情观点。 如你所想,在笔记本中或作为研究论文求职信的一部分回答以下问题:
