    Os foguetes de combustível sólido são uma característica central nos programas mundiais de exploração espacial, incluindo o novo Sistema de Lançamento Espacial que está sendo desenvolvido pela Administração Nacional de Aeronáutica e Espaço (NASA) para substituir a frota aposentada do ônibus espacial (Figura 4.1). Os motores desses foguetes dependem de misturas sólidas de produtos químicos cuidadosamente preparadas combinadas em quantidades medidas com precisão. A ignição da mistura inicia uma reação química vigorosa que gera rapidamente grandes quantidades de produtos gasosos. Esses gases são ejetados do motor do foguete por meio de seu bocal, fornecendo o empuxo necessário para impulsionar cargas pesadas para o espaço. Tanto a natureza dessa reação química quanto as relações entre as quantidades de substâncias consumidas e produzidas pela reação são considerações extremamente importantes que determinam o sucesso da tecnologia. Este capítulo descreverá como simbolizar reações químicas usando equações químicas, como classificar algumas reações químicas comuns identificando padrões de reatividade e como determinar as relações quantitativas entre as quantidades de substâncias envolvidas nas reações químicas, ou seja, a reação estequiometria.
