- Como o cérebro humano funciona? E qual é a conexão entre os processos internos do cérebro e os comportamentos externos das pessoas? Este livro didático apresentará várias maneiras pelas quais o campo da psicologia tem explorado essas questões.
- 1.1: O que é psicologia?
- A palavra psicologia foi cunhada em uma época em que os conceitos de alma e mente não eram tão claramente distintos. A raiz da ologia denota o estudo científico da mente, e a psicologia se refere ao estudo científico da mente. Como a ciência estuda apenas fenômenos observáveis e a mente não é diretamente observável, expandimos essa definição para o estudo científico da mente e do comportamento.
- 1.2: História da Psicologia
- Qualquer pessoa interessada em explorar questões relacionadas à mente geralmente o fazia em um contexto filosófico anterior ao século XIX. Dois homens, trabalhando no século XIX, são geralmente considerados os fundadores da psicologia como uma disciplina científica e acadêmica distinta da filosofia. Seus nomes eram Wilhelm Wundt e William James. Esta seção fornecerá uma visão geral das mudanças nos paradigmas que influenciaram a psicologia de Wundt e James até hoje.
- 1.3: Psicologia contemporânea
- A psicologia contemporânea é um campo diverso que é influenciado por todas as perspectivas históricas descritas na seção anterior. Reflexo da diversidade da disciplina é a diversidade vista na American Psychological Association (APA). A APA é uma organização profissional que representa psicólogos nos Estados Unidos. A APA é a maior organização de psicólogos do mundo e sua missão é avançar e disseminar o conhecimento psicológico.
- 1.4: Carreiras em psicologia
- Os psicólogos podem trabalhar em muitos lugares diferentes fazendo muitas coisas diferentes. Em geral, qualquer pessoa que deseje continuar uma carreira em psicologia em uma instituição de ensino superior de 4 anos terá que obter um doutorado em psicologia para algumas especialidades e pelo menos um mestrado para outras. Na maioria das áreas da psicologia, isso significa obter um PhD em uma área relevante da psicologia.
