- Você pode estar pensando que distinguir a masculinidade biológica da feminilidade biológica é certamente uma questão simples: basta realizar alguns testes de DNA ou hormonais, fazer um exame físico e você terá a resposta. Mas não é tão simples assim. Tanto pessoas biologicamente masculinas quanto biologicamente femininas produzem uma certa quantidade de testosterona, e diferentes laboratórios têm diferentes métodos de teste, o que torna difícil definir um limite específico para a quantidade de hormônios masculinos produzidos por uma mulher.
- 12.2: Sexo e gênero
- Você pode não ter percebido que sexo e gênero não são a mesma coisa. No entanto, os sociólogos e a maioria dos outros cientistas sociais os veem como conceitualmente distintos. Sexo se refere a diferenças físicas ou fisiológicas entre homens e mulheres, incluindo características sexuais primárias (sistema reprodutivo) e características secundárias, como altura e muscularidade. Gênero se refere a comportamentos, traços pessoais e posições sociais que a sociedade atribui a serem mulheres ou homens.

- As crianças aprendem desde cedo que existem expectativas distintas para meninos e meninas. Estudos transculturais revelam que as crianças estão cientes dos papéis de gênero aos dois ou três anos de idade. Aos quatro ou cinco anos, a maioria das crianças está firmemente enraizada em papéis de gênero culturalmente apropriados. As crianças adquirem esses papéis por meio da socialização, um processo no qual as pessoas aprendem a se comportar de uma maneira particular, conforme ditado pelos valores, crenças e atitudes da sociedade.
- 12.4: Sexo e sexualidade
- Na área da sexualidade, os sociólogos concentram sua atenção nas atitudes e práticas sexuais, não na fisiologia ou anatomia. A sexualidade é vista como a capacidade de uma pessoa ter sentimentos sexuais. Estudar atitudes e práticas sexuais é um campo particularmente interessante da sociologia porque o comportamento sexual é uma cultura universal. Ao longo do tempo e do lugar, a grande maioria dos seres humanos participou de relações sexuais.
