    • 7.1: Reprodução sexual
      A maioria dos eucariotos passa por reprodução sexual. A variação introduzida nas células reprodutivas pela meiose parece ser uma das vantagens da reprodução sexual. Meiose e fertilização se alternam nos ciclos da vida sexual. O processo de meiose produz células reprodutivas geneticamente únicas chamadas gametas, que têm metade do número de cromossomos da célula-mãe. A fertilização, a fusão de gametas haplóides de dois indivíduos, restaura a condição diploide.
    • 7.2: Meiose
      A reprodução sexual requer que os organismos diploides produzam células haplóides que podem se fundir durante a fertilização para formar descendentes diplóides. O processo que resulta em células haplóides é chamado de meiose. A meiose é uma série de eventos que organizam e separam os cromossomos em células-filhas. Durante a interfase da meiose, cada cromossomo é duplicado. Na meiose, há duas rodadas de divisão nuclear, resultando em quatro núcleos e geralmente quatro células-filhas haplóides.
    • 7.3: Erros na meiose
      O número, tamanho, forma e padrão de bandas dos cromossomos os tornam facilmente identificáveis em um cariograma e permitem a avaliação de muitas anormalidades cromossômicas. Distúrbios no número de cromossomos, ou aneuploidias, são tipicamente letais para o embrião, embora alguns genótipos trissômicos sejam viáveis. Por causa da inativação do X, as aberrações nos cromossomos sexuais geralmente têm efeitos mais leves em um indivíduo.
