    A Constituição dos EUA e seus princípios fundamentais de liberdade, igualdade e justiça são admirados e imitados em todo o mundo. No entanto, nem todo mundo que vive nos EUA desfrutou do mesmo tratamento e liberdades que a lei promete. Quando consideramos as experiências de mulheres, imigrantes, pessoas de cor, pessoas LGBTQ, pessoas com deficiência e outros grupos, a maioria dos americanos foi privada de direitos e oportunidades básicos e, às vezes, da própria cidadania. Essa ideia da América é, de fato, um trabalho em andamento.

    A luta pelos direitos civis é uma história de indivíduos corajosos e movimentos sociais despertando outros americanos, obrigando legisladores e inspirando os tribunais a cumprirem essas promessas fundadoras. Embora muitas mudanças ainda precisem ser feitas, nos últimos cem anos houve um progresso notável. No entanto, como demonstra a onda de projetos de lei de supressão de eleitores velados que passam pelas legislaturas estaduais (Figura 5.1), os membros desses grupos ainda enfrentam preconceito, discriminação e até mesmo exclusão da vida cívica.

    Qual é a diferença entre liberdades civis e direitos civis? Como a luta afro-americana pelos direitos civis evoluiu? Quais desafios as mulheres superaram para garantir o direito ao voto e quais obstáculos elas e outros grupos dos EUA ainda enfrentam? Este capítulo aborda essas e outras questões ao explorar os conceitos essenciais dos direitos civis.
