A Terra tem biomas terrestres e biomas aquáticos. A temperatura e a precipitação, bem como as variações em ambas, são os principais fatores abióticos que moldam a composição das comunidades animais e vegetais nos biomas terrestres. Existem oito grandes biomas terrestres: florestas tropicais, savanas, desertos, chaparral, pastagens temperadas, florestas temperadas, taiga e tundra ártica.
Assim como os biomas terrestres, os biomas aquáticos são influenciados por fatores abióticos. No caso dos biomas aquáticos, os fatores abióticos incluem luz, temperatura, regime de fluxo e sólidos dissolvidos. Os biomas aquáticos incluem biomas marinhos e biomas de água doce. Oceanos, recifes de coral e estuários são biomas marinhos, enquanto lagos, lagoas, rios, riachos e áreas úmidas são biomas de água doce.
