Prenons l'exemple d'un gaz idéal qui est contenu dans la moitié d'un contenant isolé thermiquement par une paroi située au milieu du contenant. L'autre moitié du récipient est sous vide et aucune molécule ne se trouve à l'intérieur. Maintenant, si nous retirons rapidement la paroi centrale, le gaz se dilate et remplit immédiatement tout le récipient, comme indiqué sur la figure\(\PageIndex{1}\).
