导言
可持续性源自两个拉丁词：sus 表示向上，tenere 表示持有。 因此，可持续性本质上是指在不损害子孙后代满足其需求的能力的前提下，通过满足当代人的需求来维持人类的生存。
可持续发展力求整合三个方面：经济、环境和社会（包括社会政治）。
- 经济利益决定了决策框架、金融资本流动和商业便利化，包括个人所体现的与经济活动相关的知识、技能、能力和其他特质。
- 环境方面承认生命系统内部的多样性和相互依存性、世界生态系统产生的商品和服务以及人类废物的影响。
- 社会/社会政治是指机构/企业与人之间的互动、表达人类价值观的职能、愿望和福祉、伦理问题以及依赖于集体行动的决策。
社会和经济要素的交汇可以构成社会 “公平” 的基础。 在开明管理的意义上，“可行性” 是通过考虑经济和环境利益而形成的。 在环境和社会要素之间存在 “可忍受”，即承认社会的运作依赖于环境资源和服务。 这三者的交汇处在于可持续性（图\(\PageIndex{b}\)）。

可持续发展范式的三个主要要素被认为同等重要，但是，权衡取决于地方/全球目标。 例如，在某些情况下，为了促进商业、粮食生产或住房，可能认为有必要使特定的生态系统退化。 实际上，在造成不可逆转的损害之前可以在多大程度上进行权衡并不总是众所周知的，而且无论如何，这三个要素在多大程度上替代是明智的（迄今为止，人类一直将经济发展视为三个要素中的主导要素）。 这导致了强大可持续性的概念，即不允许在自然、人力和社会资本之间进行权衡或受到严格限制；可持续性薄弱，权衡不受限制或极少限制。 无论人们遵循可持续性的强弱形式，都必须认识到，尽管经济和社会体系是人类的创造物，但环境不是。 相反，正常运转的环境是社会和经济的基础。
