Depuis la redécouverte des travaux de Mendel en 1900, la définition du gène est passée d'une unité abstraite de l'hérédité à une entité moléculaire tangible capable de réplication, d'expression et de mutation (Figure\(\PageIndex{1}\)). Les gènes sont composés d'ADN et sont disposés linéairement sur les chromosomes. Les gènes spécifient les séquences d'acides aminés, qui sont les éléments constitutifs des protéines. À leur tour, les protéines sont responsables de l'orchestration de presque toutes les fonctions de la cellule. Les gènes et les protéines qu'ils codent sont absolument essentiels à la vie telle que nous la connaissons.
