Se um trabalhador for exposto ao sangue ou ao OPIM, o empregador deve implementar protocolos de proteção:
- Após um incidente de exposição, os empregadores devem documentar, no mínimo, a (s) rota (s) de exposição e as circunstâncias em que o incidente de exposição ocorreu. Para ser útil, a documentação deve conter detalhes suficientes sobre o incidente.
- Registre o incidente no registro OSHA 300 se perfurado ou cortado e se não for penetrado, mas exposto (respingos) e ocorrer doença
- Disponibilize vacinas contra hepatite gratuitamente para os funcionários. Os funcionários podem recusar a vacina.
- Teste o sangue do funcionário para detectar a presença de doença
- Exigir e fornecer aconselhamento pós-exposição aos funcionários após um incidente de exposição. O aconselhamento sobre o estado da infecção, incluindo resultados e interpretação de todos os testes, ajudará o funcionário a compreender o risco potencial de infecção e a tomar decisões sobre a proteção de contatos pessoais.
Resíduos regulamentados
O Padrão de Patógenos Transmitidos pelo Sangue usa o termo “resíduo regulamentado” para se referir às seguintes categorias de resíduos que requerem tratamento especial: (1) sangue líquido ou semilíquido ou OPIM; (2) itens contaminados com sangue ou OPIM e que liberariam essas substâncias no estado líquido ou semilíquido se comprimidos; (3) itens que são endurecidos com sangue seco ou OPIM e são capazes de liberar esses materiais durante o manuseio; (4) objetos cortantes contaminados; e (5) resíduos patológicos e microbiológicos contendo sangue ou OPIM.
Embora não sejam considerados uma operação de emergência, alguns elementos do Padrão HAZWOPER 1910.120 podem ser seguidos quando os trabalhadores são expostos a sangue e materiais infecciosos durante operações regulamentadas de limpeza de resíduos.
