Em 1999, o Plano de Conservação do Deserto de Sonora foi criado para ajudar as populações e habitats da vida selvagem. Como resultado desse plano, os biólogos conseguiram identificar paisagens com barreiras de vida selvagem e obter financiamento para instalar corredores de vida selvagem. Na State Route (SR) 77, dois corredores de vida selvagem foram instalados, um viaduto e uma passagem subterrânea. Esses corredores foram os primeiros desse tipo a serem construídos no deserto de Sonora, por isso era difícil estimar o nível de sucesso que eles teriam. Como tal, um plano de monitoramento foi estabelecido para documentar quais espécies usavam os corredores e com que frequência os usavam com o passar do tempo desde sua instalação. A figura abaixo ilustra o uso dos corredores de vida selvagem mais de 2 anos após sua instalação:
