    Définition : Fonction

    Une fonction est une règle qui attribue à chaque élément de l'ensemble de valeurs d'entrée (le domaine) un et un seul élément de l'ensemble de valeurs de sortie (la plage).

    Déterminez si chacune des équations suivantes est une fonction :

    1. \(y = x^2 + 1\)
    2. \(y^2 = x + 1\)

    Solution

    1. Pour voir le résultat de cette équation, soit x = 3.

    \(\begin{aligned} y &= x^2 + 1 \\ y &= 3^2 + 1 \\ y &= 9 + 1 \\ y &= 10\end{aligned}\)

    Toute valeur saisie pour\(x\) génère exactement une valeur pour\(y\).

    Il n'y a qu'une seule solution pour\(y\),\(y = 10\).

    \(y = x^2 + 1\)est une fonction !

    1. Pour voir le résultat de cette équation, encore une fois, laissez\(x = 3\).

    \(\begin{aligned} y^2 &= x + 1 \\ y^ 2 &= 3 + 1 = 4 \\ y &= \sqrt{4 } \\ y &= 2 \text{ or } y = −2\end{aligned}\)

    Toute valeur saisie pour ne\(x\) donnera pas exactement une valeur pour\(y\). Il existe deux solutions pour\(y\),\(y = 2\) et\(y = −2\).

    \(y^2 = x + 1\)N'est PAS une fonction !
